Citizens Bank promotion links to GetGo gasoline

Citizens Bank has rolled out a program to give customers additional discounts on GetGo gasoline when using their bank card for a variety of purchases.

Customers who buy $50 worth of groceries a month at a Giant Eagle supermarket receive a 3 cents per gallon discount at GetGo locations, on top of the Giant Eagle's 10-cent-per-gallon discount.

Branded "Citizens Bank fuelperks," the program provides the additional cents off when Citizens customers use their bank cards as a credit card, but not as a debit card.

Once enrolled, Citizens customers get an additional 1 cent per gallon discount at the pump for each $50 of gasoline per month they buy with their Citizens cards.

Citizens operates 55 branches in Giant Eagles in Western Pennsylvania, and 97 traditional branches. The supermarket has 67 GetGos in this region and about 75 in Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia.

"We fully expect to obtain new customers through this program but also to provide something of great value to our existing customers," said Citizens spokesman Mike Jones. About 4,000 customers have enrolled so far, he said, even before the start of advertising planned for Dec. 1.

In addition, Citizens customers receive 1 cent per gallon off for every $50 worth of merchandise they buy elsewhere, including online purchases, with their bank card.

"This is one more way we think customers can stretch their holiday shopping dollars," said Giant Eagle spokesman Rob Borella. He said the chain expects to extend the gasoline discount program to other channels in the future.
